Palm Straw Ngob with Attached Crown

Thailand 1950 -2000 Tan mens SE Asia [Palm Straw]
Overview: The straw hat, known as a ngob in Thailand, has a flat crown. There is a small bit of decoration on top, comprised of colored tin foil underneath the straw.
Construction: The surface is created from layers of flat palm which are overlapped slightly to shed water. The interior is woven. There is a narrow strip of plastic along the edge to hold it into the circular shape. Inside there is a woven crown known as a rang, attached to the hat, to help hold it on the head and provide ventilation, which is 7" across and 5" deep. The hat itself is 17" across; the top of the crown measures 7.5" across. See supplemental pages for additional information.
