Wedding Kimono

Overview: The elaborate kimono, a uchikake, has a pattern that has been painted rather than woven. It is meant to be worn for a wedding and depicts cranes in flight which is a symbol of longevity. It is lined with red silk.

Construction: The garment is machine-made with pattern printed on with synthetic textile paint. See supplemental pages for detailed information.

Provenance: Donated to the Department of Dramatic Art by Tom Hardison. He collected the garment while living in Japan during the late 20th century. There is a label in Japanese; the tan label reads "Coqueluche No."

Damage: The garment was worn for celebrations and/or weddings so some fraying appears on the padded roll hem.
