Overview: The cotton yukata is for a young woman and appears to be pink although it is woven from white and red fibers in stripes of varying widths in a pinwheel pattern. It is made by machine and has a solid white cotton lining on the upper body in front and back to help maintain the shape of this light-weight yukata.
Supplemental Pages: Full Description, Bibliography
Construction: The garment is made by machine.
Provenance: From the Collection of Bobbi Owen. The yukata and several related pieces were a gift to her from a Japanese exchange student at UNC-Chapel Hill in the early 1980s. The related pieces include the yukata (G3137), an obi (G3138), an obi ita (G3139), an obi jime (G 3140), and an obi sash (G3141). The student also gave Professor Owen her geta (G3130) and two pair of tabi, one pair of which was never worn (G3136). All the pieces are carefully folded into a mesh bag with a zipper along one edge; some of the pieces are in a cotton drawstring bag. When all folded together, the tidy package measures 20" X 14".
