Supplemental Pages: Full Description, Bibliography
Construction: This gown would have been worn under an even more elaborate sleeveless coat. It has high shoulder pads at the top of the sleeves that are quilted. The top of the sleeves have been gauged (cartridge pleated) to fit into the armhole. It is fully lined with green cotton and underlined with cotton flannel. The sleeves are very long and could be turned back to show the shape of the horse-shoe cuffs. See full description for detailed information.
Trim: There are stripes of flat braid sewn along the waist, hem, and closings. The buttons at the neck are flat and shaped like coins. The ones along the left side are round. Both close with fabric loops.
Provenance: The garment was found in costume storage in the Department of Dramatic Art.
Damage: The gown has only been lightly worn, so it is in good shape.
