1900 -1910 Fuchsia, Cream, and Black womans underwear dressing gown [Silk Broadcloth]
Overview: The fuchsia silk broadcloth dressing gown is floor length with a slight train at the back. It has long pointed-hem sleeves, a large shawl collar that extends into ties at the front sides, and a hidden closure at the side front. The center panel has 5 horizontal rows of cream 1" lace; the same lace also trims the cuffs. A wider 3" scalloped lace trim adorns the outer edge of the collar and ties. There are 2 large black velvet ribbon flowers, resembling spider chrysanthemums, made from loops of ribbon at each side of the the front near the bust points.
Construction: The dressing gown has an interior bodice that is flat-lined in the back and loose in front made of cream linen. The center front panel is lined with cotton. The garment has been put together by machine, with the exception of the seams, which are hand finished on the inside.The interior bodice closes at center front with hooks and bars under the exterior layer which closes up the left side front with hooks and loops that are under a lap. The back of the gown is made from six pieces with a deep inverted pleat at center back which is released 17 1/2" below the neck edge. Center back measures 61 1/2" from neck to floor. The bottom edge measures 150" around. The sleeves are long, cut in one piece, and gathered into the armseye. They come to a shallow point over the top of the hand and are finished with a piece of 1" lace. A series of 14 1/16" horizontal tucks are spaced through the sleeve. There is a yoke at center front with a square neckline that is 7" wide at the top and 8" wide at the bottom, and 5 1/2" long. This yoke is lined with cotton. It has 5 rows of slightly gathered lace which is the same as at the bottom of the sleeve. The lace at the top edge has been stitched by hand, perhaps as a repair, and faces upwards. The collar is a stitched into the neckline at the back for 9" and then is loose, forming a shawl with long ends that taper to points. The entire piece is 90 inches long from tip to tip. It is edged with scalloped lace that is 3 inches wide. The inner bodice is flat-lined through the back to the side seams but not through the front. It closes with 12 hooks and bars. There is a drawstring to control the fullness at the waist. Center front of the inner bodice is 15" long.
Damage: There are a few stains and tears, including a large tear at center back. Some of the stitching is coming loose.
