Printable page Cream Printed Floral Wool Dressing Gown

1890 -1900 Cream with Gray Pattern womans underwear dressing gown [Wool Challis]
Overview: This ankle length dressing gown is made from lightweight cream wool challis with a gray leaf pattern printed on it. The gown has 3/4 length sleeves and a "peter pan" collar. It has a yoke with a ruffle at top of bust line and also has a wide ruffle attached at the bottom edge.
Construction: The overdress is open from the ruffle at the bottom of the yoke to the floor but there is an shaped underbodice made of brown glazed cotton that closes center front with 14 hooks and loops (bottom hook missing). The under bodice is flat-lined through the yoke to the wool and then hangs separately below the yoke line. There are two shaping darts on each side of the front which show signs of having been let out. The bottom edge of the under bodice is ragged so it may have been cut off. The yoke is 5 1/2" long at the front and the body of the gown is 45" long, for a total length at center front of 50 1/2". There is a 3" ruffle around the bottom edge. On the inside, there is a 6" band of cotton muslin stitched all the way around to support the ruffle and prevent wear at the hem. The ruffle at the bottom edge is gathered and stitched on by hand but the rest of the garment is machine-made. The garment below the ruffle measures 108" at the bottom edge. The long sleeves, cut in one piece, are full. They are gathered at shoulder and above the 4" wide cuff which has no closing.
Damage: There is some fracturing throughout and a few stains.
