1910 -1920 Black womans evening-dress [Cotton]
Overview: This black cotton mourning dress has raglan sleeves and a tubular shape. It closes down just right of center front with hidden buttons. Down the center front on the surface are two rows of jet buttons that have a small jet bead flower in the middle of them. There is lace insertion down center front, at the back and on the sleeves. At the back, the lace insertion extends from the center back of the collar under the arms, to join with the center front of the collar. Black lace also trims the collar which has three wiggly bones in the back to hold its shape.
Construction: The dress has elbow length raglan sleeves. The interior has a black 2" grosgrain waist tape to stabilize the waist. It closes separately with hooks and bars and measures 27" when closed. The skirt closes down center front with hooks and bars in a short hidden placket. At the natural waist there is a 2" black cotton belt with a ruffle at the ends that closes with two hooks and bars at center front. There is a 12" long peplum that extends below the waist. The skirt, which measures 38" from the belt to the bottom of the hem, also has two tiers of self-fabric. The collar closes with a button and a hook and bar on the right side. The bottom edge is finished with a 2 1/2" silk satin ribbon stitched to the interior.
Provenance: A label that reads "The Waldorf 16" is sewn into the right side of the collar.
