Printable page Ivory Walking Skirt

1890 -1900 Ivory womans skirt [Silk and wool]
Overview: The skirt has a slight train. It is flat in the front and around the sides and full in the back.
Construction: This ivory silk walking skirt consists of a silk taffeta lining and taffeta and applied wool outer skirt. The waist measures 20" and the center front length measures 40". The wool is applied in wide bands around the skirt and machine quilted in 1/4" rows around the skirt. The back of the skirt is gathered into the top band of quilted wool, which is shaped to be 3" wide in center back and extends to 5.5" wide, coming to points, at center front. The taffeta lining is joined at the waistband in the front but has pulled away from the waistband in the back. The lining has a back placket, as does the skirt, but the back pieces of the lining are not gathered but instead are flat underneath the gathers of the overskirt. The trim at the hem is sewn on top of the fabric. A half inch organza ruffle is ruched and hand sewn to the bottom of the silk organza hem ruffle. A separate hand embroidered lace is applied on top of the organza. The lace has gold bullion couched around the flowers as well as beads sewn on the center of the circle motifs. The whole ruffle is attached to the skirt by hand and finished with a 1/4" wide hand embroidered ribbon. The hem ruffle is 3" wide at center front, expanding to 6 inches in the back. There are also 12 decorative buttons with tassels adorning the front of the skirt. Each are made by hand and in very good condition. The photograph indicates it is more fuller in the back than it may be.
Damage: The silk underskirt and waistband are deteriorating with small holes and missing stitching. There is also staining and discoloration on various parts of the skirt.
